CASTLE ISLAND

This island was at one time called Oilean-na-Circe. A castle was erected on it by the sons of Rory O'Connor. The castle was destroyed by Felim O'Connor at the same time as the castle on Castlehag Island. The present remnant is probably of a later date. Also on the island is the grave of the writer George Moore. He was born in Moorehall House - ruin on nearby mainland - in 1852 and died on January 21st 1933. His ashes were laid to rest on May 27th 1933.
