The remains of a wooden causeway have been recently discovered on the western shore of Derrinrush at the narrowest part of the lake. It consists of two rows of wooden posts stretching out into the lake. The first posts are to be seen about 15yrds from the shore line and continue for about 60yrds, they then disappear into the bed of the lake. the posts that can be seen protruding about 2" - 3" over the bed. There is no trace of any posts on the opposite shore. Samples were taken from this site and sent to Queens University Belfast for analysis and they say it dates back to 1500BC.
