CHURCH ISLAND

St. Patrick is said to have banished the 9 goblins. A St. Finan founded a church here in the 7th century, he was a contemporary of St. Cormac who came from Munster to evangelize Carra. Finan appears to have been jealous of him so Cormac departed north. But before he left he said to Finan that that Church shall be deserted hereafter and shall be inhabited by no servant of Christ. According to tradition, one of the Canons from Ballintubber Abbey, Cummin MacFiachra, lived in a cell on the island. He repaired and decorated the missals and scrolls used in the Abbey. It is sometimes called "Cummins Island". Ballintubber Abbey Trust purchased the island and have rebuilt the church and turned the island into a place of prayer and solitude.
